A native meadow replaced turf to stabilize the steep hillside, enhancing the landscape around a historic chapel and providing key habitat in Brooklyn.
A dynamic tapestry of spring bulbs, wildflowers, grasses, and shrubs enliven the prominent hillside, noted for its grand mausoleums just beyond the cemetery’s entrance. Deep-rooted meadow vegetation prevents erosion and stormwater runoff, a problem prior to meadow installation. As a replacement for what had been turf for over a century, the meadow reduces maintenance inputs while helping Green-Wood meet its habitat goals.
LWLA also assisted with temporary signage that explained the meadow development process and continues to advise Green-Wood on management of the Chapel Meadow.
