Home to one of the earliest environmental studies programs in the country, Colby College reflects that leadership in its landscape.

As part of a commitment to reducing turf and its associated inputs, Colby installed meadows around two of its newest signature buildings, the Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center and the Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts.  LWLA provided key guidance on both projects, serving as meadow consultant to the design teams.  LWLA developed seed mixes, plant lists, installation specifications, and oversaw installation of the Gordon Center meadow.

LWLA also conducted training for facilities staff in meadow management so that Colby can manage its own meadows rather than bringing in outside contractors.  LWLA continues to advise Colby on meadow management, helping them in their mission of being a leader in environmental stewardship.

“It’s really important that powerful institutions lead by example, and this is a small and important thing that Colby is doing.”
